New Delhi: Mobile users could soon enjoy the convenience of streaming videos without a SIM card or internet connection, thanks to the potential implementation of Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting technology. Addressing a Broadcasting Summit, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra revealed that trials for the home-grown D2M technology will soon be conducted in 19 cities. Chandra emphasized the importance of reserving the 470-582 MHz spectrum for this emerging technology, stating that shifting 25-30% of video traffic to D2M would alleviate congestion on 5G networks, accelerate the nation’s digital evolution, and democratize content delivery.
Last year, pilot projects were carried out in Bengaluru, Kartavya Path, and Noida to test the D2M technology. Chandra highlighted that this technology has the potential to bring television programming to nearly 8-9 crore “TV Dark” homes across the country, as out of the 280 million households in India, only 190 million possess television sets. With 80 crore smartphones in the country, Chandra pointed out that 69% of content accessed by users is in video format, leading to network congestion and buffering issues.
Developed by Saankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur, the D2M broadcasting technology leverages terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure and public broadcaster-assigned spectrum to transmit video, audio, and data signals directly to compatible mobile and smart devices.
