New Delhi:
Approximately 40 MLAs from the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its coalition partners are returning to the state today from Hyderabad to participate in the crucial floor test scheduled for tomorrow.
These MLAs had been accommodated in a resort near Hyderabad following the appointment of JMM leader Champai Soren as Chief Minister. Hemant Soren, the son of JMM co-founder Shibu Soren and Champai Soren’s predecessor, is currently in jail due to alleged corruption charges.
The ruling JMM resorted to “resort politics” to safeguard its MLAs from potential overtures by rival parties seeking to induce defections.
The ruling coalition in Jharkhand holds 46 MLAs, which is five more than the required majority of 41 in the 81-member assembly. One seat is currently vacant, resulting in the majority mark being counted for 80 seats.
The composition of the ruling alliance is as follows: JMM (28), Congress (16), RJD (1), and CPI(ML) (1).
The BJP and its allies have 29 MLAs.
Political analysts believe that barring any unforeseen developments, the JMM government will comfortably pass the floor test.
This is not the first time the JMM is facing a floor test. In September 2022, Hemant Soren’s government secured a majority with 48 votes in favor. At that time, Hemant Soren also faced the possibility of disqualification from the assembly due to corruption allegations.
The current Chief Minister, Champai Soren, was actively involved in the Jharkhand movement during the late 90s, alongside Shibu Soren. He previously served as the Transport Minister in the Hemant Soren government and enjoys the support of the Soren family.
