Detroit — Colin McConnell, a renter in a duplex on Detroit’s west side, had been experiencing disruptions from his new neighbors living above him. However, these disruptions were not caused by noisy adults but rather by three energetic pee-wee running backs constantly sprinting back and forth across the hardwood floors.
Little did McConnell know, these lively children belonged to 33-year-old Donald Wilson. For months, McConnell had only been aware of their presence through the sounds coming from above. But when the two finally met, McConnell sensed that something was troubling Wilson.
“You could just tell something was weighing on him,” McConnell recalled. “So, I asked him if he was okay, and he just replied, ‘Not really.'”
As McConnell discovered, Wilson had recently lost his partner and the mother of his children, Lakenya. She tragically passed away from a stroke at the age of 39 in August. Although they were co-parenting and living separately at the time of her death, Wilson found himself overwhelmed by the responsibilities of raising their children while working full-time and having minimal savings.
After hearing Wilson’s heartbreaking story, the noise from above became the least of McConnell’s concerns. He took to social media, sharing a video asking for any assistance for Wilson’s family. Within hours, boxes filled with everything Wilson and his children would need for Christmas and beyond started arriving at McConnell’s doorstep.
What touched Wilson the most was that all these gifts came from strangers. “That was the best feeling because it was random people that you don’t expect,” Wilson expressed. “That surprise joy, it was just amazing. I’ve never felt it before.”
As the holiday season approaches, McConnell will not only be listening for sleighbells but also for the joyful sound of children’s feet running above, a reminder that Christmas has arrived in their duplex.
