US Couple Sells Everything to Live on Cruise Ships, Finding It Cheaper Than Living on Land
A couple from Florida, John and Melody Hennessee, made a bold decision three years ago to sell all their possessions and embark on a dream journey of sailing around the world. According to the New York Post, they sold their home, business, and most of their belongings in 2020.
Initially, the couple bought a motorhome to travel across the United States. However, when Mr. Hennessee grew tired of driving, they stumbled upon a Facebook ad for a 274-day Royal Caribbean cruise. Without hesitation, they jumped at the opportunity.
Since then, John and Melody have been exploring various destinations across the globe. They have visited Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the South Pacific. Currently, they are navigating around the Dominican Republic. The couple finds that living on cruise ships is much more cost-effective than their previous landlocked life.
“We no longer have a mortgage or the expense of homes. We no longer have vehicle insurance, property insurance, or utility bills. The list goes on. We are certain cruising is cheaper. Right now it is probably close to half of what it was when we lived on land,” Mr. Hennessee explained to Sky News.
During their travels, the pair typically docks at each destination and explores for three to five days at a time. Their schedule is fully booked with trips until December 2024.
In an interesting development, John and Melody will soon be boarding a residential cruise ship called Villa Vie Odyssey. This all-inclusive cruise ship offers permanent residences, with approximately 30% of passengers becoming full-time inhabitants. The ship will depart from Southampton in May of next year.
“We wanted to buy a cabin so we can design it how we want. It’s going to be home for us, for probably a minimum of 15 years on the ship. We are just water people. We are both boaters. We love being on the ocean,” shared Melody Hennessee.
The adventurous couple’s story is a testament to their passion for exploration and their desire to live life on their own terms.
