During a media interaction at the CSIR-NIO campus on Monday, Dr Kalaiselvi emphasized that this robot represents the initial phase in the development of a highly capable underwater vehicle capable of exploring the depths of the Indian Ocean. The long-term plan is to create a vehicle that can travel thousands of meters in the sea.

CSIR-NIO Director Sunil Kumar Singh explained that the C-bot will play a crucial role in monitoring coral reefs in the ocean. He noted that coral bleaching, which is a consequence of climate change, is a significant concern. Singh stated, “Equipped with various sensors and cameras, the robot collects data and may help elucidate the reasons behind coral mortality.”

Beyond aiding researchers, the C-bot will also support the Indian Navy in conducting bathymetry studies. These studies will assist in mapping navigation channels and identifying hydrothermal vents, where geothermally heated water emerges from the ocean floor. Singh highlighted the robot’s ability to locate active hydrothermal vents, which release numerous elements into the ocean and support thriving biological activity, even in extreme environments with temperatures reaching 400-500 degrees Celsius. The real-time data and photographs transmitted by the vehicle will provide valuable insights for researchers.
