Ghosh and Manojit Samanta, coordinators of the Centre of Excellence for Conservation of Heritage Structures at CSIR-CBRI, led the teams in reviewing the foundation design, conducting 3D structural analysis, and designing the Ram mandir. Their work was guided by CSIR-CBRI Director Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla and his predecessor N Gopalakrishnan.

The study involved geophysical characterisation using Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and electrical resistance tomography to estimate primary wave velocity, identify anomalies, water saturation zones, and water tables. These findings played a crucial role in underground investigations and determining seismic design parameters.

Additionally, the CSIR-CBRI reviewed soil investigation schemes, foundation design parameters, excavation schemes, and recommendations for foundation and structure monitoring. The structural design of the temple was recommended after analyzing over 50 computer models under different loading conditions to ensure optimal performance, architectural appeal, and safety.

The superstructure of the temple is constructed using Bansi Paharpur sandstone, which does not require steel reinforcement and is designed to last for 1,000 years. The engineering properties of this sandstone were evaluated at the Centre to inform the structural analysis.

Moreover, specialized bricks with a compressive strength of over 20 MPa at 28 days of curing under standard conditions were used in the temple’s structures. These measures contribute to the temple’s resilience and longevity.

The scientific study conducted by CSIR-CBRI provides reassurance regarding the structural safety of the Ayodhya Ram temple, ensuring it can withstand significant seismic events for centuries to come.
