New Jharkhand Chief Minister Today? Champai Soren Gets Governor's Call

Champai Soren claims support from 47 MLAs

Ranchi:

The state of Jharkhand has been without a government for the past 18 hours, leading to a state of confusion. Chief Minister-in-waiting Champai Soren has reached out to Governor CP Radhakrishnan, urging immediate action to form a government. The Governor has responded by calling Mr Soren at 5.30 pm.

Yesterday, Mr Soren was chosen as the legislative party leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha after Hemant Soren resigned as Chief Minister and was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on corruption charges.

In a letter to the Governor, Champai Soren stated that he had submitted a letter of support signed by 47 MLAs from JMM, Congress, and RJD, surpassing the majority mark in the 81-member Assembly. He mentioned that all the MLAs accompanied him to the Raj Bhavan but were not allowed inside.

“Sir, there has been no government in the state for the past 18 hours, resulting in a state of confusion. As the constitutional head, we, the MLAs, and the people of the state expect you to take prompt action to form a popular government and bring the state out of this confusion,” he wrote in Hindi.

Champai Soren also offered to bring all the supporting MLAs to the Governor’s residence to provide assurance of their majority support.

Hemant Soren is currently under investigation for his alleged involvement in an illegal land ownership change racket operated by mafia groups in Jharkhand.

The JMM leader has accused the investigative agency of misusing its power to destabilize a democratically elected government. Hemant Soren has approached the Supreme Court regarding this matter, and the petition is scheduled for tomorrow.

“The Enforcement Directorate is shamelessly acting under the directives of the Central Government and relentlessly targeting the petitioner to destabilize the democratically elected government led by the petitioner, who is the Chief Minister of the State of Jharkhand,” he stated in the petition.
