New Delhi:

A one-of-a-kind ceremonial bench will convene tomorrow to commemorate the Supreme Court’s 75th anniversary. The arrangement of the bench will mirror the seating configuration of the court’s inaugural session on January 28, 1950.

Sources have revealed that this unique ceremonial bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has been organized for the very first time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the pre-ceremony program before the commencement of the ceremonial sitting.

The ceremonial bench will be situated in the courtroom of Chief Justice Chandrachud and will be attended by all 34 judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice Chandrachud himself.

Similar to the arrangement in 1950, the Chief Justices of all 25 high courts will also be present. The event will be live-streamed online.

The purpose of the ceremonial sitting is to assure citizens that the judiciary will always fulfill its role as the guardian of the Constitution, according to sources.

Sources have further stated that Chief Justice Chandrachud reviewed photographs of the first bench of the Supreme Court in 1950 and consulted extensively to finalize the details of tomorrow’s event.

During the inaugural session in 1950, both Supreme Court judges and high court judges occupied the same bench. For tomorrow’s event, the bench in Chief Justice Chandrachud’s courtroom has been prepared to accommodate all 34 judges of the Supreme Court, as well as the 25 high court Chief Justices, albeit only as judges.

The live-streamed event is scheduled to last for 30 minutes, showcasing the digital initiatives undertaken by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Chandrachud’s leadership.

The program will also include the inauguration of the Supreme Court’s new website.
