New Delhi:

A 22-year-old man from Trilokpuri has been arrested in New Delhi for allegedly deceiving people by promising to arrange blood for those in need, the police reported on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Sahil Kumar, was apprehended after a complaint was filed by an individual seeking four units of blood for his hospitalized mother in Patparganj. The complainant had made the request on a social media app, according to a senior police officer.

Subsequently, the complainant was contacted by a person who claimed to be able to assist but requested a “convenience fee” of Rs 200 per unit. The complainant paid Kumar Rs 800 initially, but when the doctors demanded the blood, Kumar asked for an additional Rs 1,000, the officer explained.

Suspicions arose when the complainant asked for a refund, but Kumar ignored his calls and turned off his phone. Following an investigation, the police identified the suspect’s location in Trilokpuri and conducted a raid, resulting in Kumar’s arrest, stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Jimmu Chiram.

During interrogation, Kumar revealed that he had been working at a pharmaceutical laboratory in Noida, where he discovered that blood donations could be facilitated through a mobile app. Taking advantage of this knowledge, he created an account on the app and started exploiting people’s willingness to donate blood.

He would deceive victims by demanding a “convenience fee” of Rs 200 per unit, claiming it was required to cover transportation costs to the hospital. However, Kumar never actually went to the hospital to donate blood, the police added.
