Amidst the cold winter, Delhi woke up to shallow fog on Friday, leading to poor visibility and disruptions in flight and train services.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that isolated areas of Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh were covered in a layer of fog, while dense fog was observed in isolated pockets of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand.

As of 11:30 pm on Thursday, the visibility in Delhi’s Safdarjung and East Uttar Pradesh was recorded at 500 meters, while several areas in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand experienced visibility as low as 50 meters.

“According to the visibility recorded at 11:30 pm IST today, Haryana’s Hissar had a visibility of 50 meters, Churu in Rajasthan had a visibility of 50 meters, Ranchi in Jharkhand had a visibility of 50 meters, Safdarjung in Delhi had a visibility of 500 meters, and Gorakhpur and Varanasi (Babatpur) in East Uttar Pradesh had a visibility of 500 meters each,” stated the IMD.

People were seen huddling near fires at the New Delhi Railway Station area to stay warm in the cold weather.

On February 1, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 12.3 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 18.6 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has predicted ongoing light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in various areas of Delhi-NCR. This comes after unexpected rainfall in the city the previous day.

“Currently, thunderstorms with moderate-intensity rain are occurring in many places of Delhi,” stated the IMD.

“These thunderstorms will affect Delhi and adjacent areas such as Narela, Bawana, Alipur, Burari, Rohini, Karawal Nagar, as well as NCR areas including Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Gurugram, and Manesar,” added the IMD’s tweet.
