Gujarat Police acts against illegal immigration following France plane incident

Gujarat Police's Move Against Illegal Immigration After France Plane Row

The official said that many passengers are from Gujarat.

Ahmedabad:

Gujarat Police has initiated the formation of teams to dismantle a suspected illegal immigration network involving “agents”. They will also coordinate with passengers of the plane that arrived in Mumbai from France on Tuesday, according to a senior officer.

The officer mentioned that a significant number of passengers are from Gujarat.

The Airbus A340 aircraft, carrying 276 passengers, mostly Indians, was grounded in France for four days due to suspected human trafficking. It eventually landed in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday, an official stated.

“The CID crime aims to take action against agents who had promised assistance to the victims in their illegal entry into the US and other countries. We have formed four teams that will gather information from the victims regarding the promises made to them by these agents,” informed Superintendent of Police, CID (Crime), Sanjay Kharat.

He further revealed that a majority of the passengers on the chartered plane that returned from France belonged to the districts of Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, and Anand.

“The police will coordinate with the passengers upon their arrival in Gujarat from Mumbai to identify the agents and agencies involved. We will also investigate whether the documents provided to them for migration to the US and other countries were forged,” he added.

Additionally, the police will strive to determine the number of individuals who have been transported abroad through this method and identify those seeking to travel in a similar manner, stated the SP.

Mr Kharat mentioned that different agents involved in illegal immigration often work in collaboration.

“The agents operating at the village and district levels are relatively small players controlled by the kingpin who operates at the international level,” he explained.

The Gujarat police will conduct a thorough investigation to gain a comprehensive understanding of their operations, he stated.

“Different agencies employ various modus operandi based on the specific needs of individuals seeking migration, such as the requirement for forged documents, and rates are determined accordingly,” the SP said. He also added that the victims will be interrogated, leading the police to the kingpin.

The charter flight, operated by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines and bound for Nicaragua, had made a technical stopover at Vatry near Paris on Thursday when French police intervened.

French authorities have launched a judicial investigation into the purpose and conditions of the trip, with a specialized unit in organized crime looking into suspected human trafficking.

In Mumbai, immigration authorities questioned some of the 276 passengers; however, no passengers were detained, and they were allowed to leave the airport by 11:30 am, an official confirmed.
