Lioness Fatally Struck by Train in Gujarat, Marking Third Incident This Month

A lioness in Gujarat’s Amreli district died today while undergoing treatment after being hit by a train a few days ago. This is the third incident this month where a big cat has been killed by a train in the district. The lioness was injured on January 20 after being struck by a passenger train in Rajula taluka. It was then transferred to Shakkarbaug zoo in Junagadh district for treatment, but unfortunately, it did not survive.

Earlier this month, on January 3, another lioness was injured by a goods train near Vijapadi village in Gir (East) forest division of Amreli. Despite receiving primary treatment and being moved to Shakkarbaug zoo, it succumbed to its injuries on January 11. Additionally, on January 12, a lion was also hit by a train near Amrutvel village in the same division of Amreli district.

In response to these incidents, state forest minister Mulu Bera expressed concern and stated that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. These measures include reducing the speed of trains passing through wildlife areas and increasing the height of fencing along railway tracks.

According to a government report in 2020, the population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat has increased by nearly 29% from 523 to 674 in five years from 2015. However, there have been 26 unnatural lion deaths reported in the state in the past two years, including incidents of big cats being hit by vehicles or falling into open wells.

Efforts are being made to address this issue and ensure the safety of the lion population in Gujarat.

In a saddening turn of events, a lioness lost her life after being struck by a train in Gujarat, marking the third such incident this month. The incident highlights the increasing threat to wildlife caused by railway tracks passing through their habitats. The railways and forest departments are urged to take immediate action to prevent such tragic incidents and ensure the safety of these magnificent creatures.
