The body of a police constable who was killed during an encounter with a notorious criminal has been sent to his hometown Muzaffarnagar today. Sachin Rathi was shot during yesterday’s encounter with murder-accused Ashok Yadav in Kannauj and he succumbed to his injuries last night.
Rathi was a member of a four-member team that went to arrest Ashok Yadav, who is wanted in at least 20 cases, from his home in Kannauj. The 52-year-old had jumped bail and was hiding in a village where his wife has been serving as a pradhan.
The team was dispatched to apprehend Yadav after a local court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
However, Ashok Yadav and his son Abhay opened fire on the police team. With the assistance of reinforcements from four police stations, both of them were eventually apprehended.
During the hour-long encounter, Rathi was shot in the thigh and died due to massive blood loss at a hospital in Kanpur where he was taken for treatment.
The 30-year-old constable was scheduled to get married in a month to a colleague.
“We want him to be declared a martyr… and the criminals should face the same consequences… they should experience what happened to Sachin… we demand justice,” said his uncle Devendra Rathi.
Since Yogi Adityanath’s government came into power in March 2017, more than 16 policemen have lost their lives and over 1500 have been injured during encounters with criminals in Uttar Pradesh.
A total of 11,808 encounters have taken place in this period.
