Newsearay News – Congress President Writes Letter to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Expresses Concerns Over Suspension of MPs

Congress President and Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressing his concerns over the suspension of MPs during the recent winter session of Parliament. In the letter, Kharge emphasized that such a large-scale suspension is detrimental to the core principles of parliamentary democracy and offered to meet with the Vice-President to address these concerns constructively.

Kharge highlighted that multiple notices were submitted by the Opposition parties under the relevant rules of the Rajya Sabha to discuss the breach of Parliament security. He stated that the Opposition was prepared for a meaningful discussion on the matter and reiterated his commitment to open dialogue. Kharge expressed hope that the Chairman would accommodate the concerns of the Opposition, emphasizing that while the government may have its way, the Opposition must also have its say in parliamentary democracy.

The letter from Kharge was in response to a letter from Jagdeep Dhankhar earlier in the day, where the Rajya Sabha Chairman expressed disappointment over Kharge’s refusal to meet him, considering it not in sync with parliamentary practices. Sources close to the Vice-President revealed that Dhankhar sought an interaction with Kharge or a way forward to address the situation in a healthy manner.

The winter session of Parliament, which was adjourned one day ahead of schedule, was marked by turmoil and significant incidents that will be remembered in the history of the Parliament. Initially, the Opposition appeared more accommodative, but chaos erupted after a security breach on December 13. The demand for statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the incident led to intense confrontation between the government and the Opposition.

As tensions escalated, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, and the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, started suspending protesting MPs. By the end of the winter session, an unprecedented 146 MPs had been suspended.

The Congress President’s letter aims to address the concerns regarding the suspension of MPs and promote open discussion and dialogue to uphold the principles of parliamentary democracy.,

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament), Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior leader of the opposition Congress party, expressed his concerns regarding the functioning of the government in Parliament. Kharge stated that although the government may have its way due to its numerical strength, it should not undermine the importance of parliamentary democracy and the opposition’s role in ensuring accountability. He emphasized the need for constructive debates, discussions, and the participation of all members in decision-making processes. Kharge’s letter highlights the opposition’s determination to uphold democratic values and ensure effective functioning of the Parliament.
