UK diplomats stake claim in San Francisco by planting their flag.

The United Kingdom is strengthening its presence in California as it seeks to build relationships with state leaders and shape legislation in various areas, such as artificial intelligence, data privacy, and electric vehicles. British Consul General Tammy Sandhu emphasized the influence of California at the federal level and highlighted the potential for achieving significant results at the state level.

During a reception in San Francisco, Matt Clifford, a top artificial intelligence adviser to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, engaged with local tech executives, elected officials, and advisors to state Sen. Scott Wiener. The event coincided with Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of an executive order outlining California’s approach to the responsible development of AI.

The United Kingdom has been actively sending cabinet-level officials to San Francisco, including Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch and Secretary of State for Defense Grant Shapps. With Brexit resulting in the country no longer being represented by EU diplomats, the UK is expanding its presence worldwide.

Clifford, a tech executive, advocates for the development of safety regulations for AI that foster innovation. British envoys, such as Christopher Cambises, the head of political affairs in Sacramento, focus on sharing technical expertise to facilitate compliance with rules in both countries. Their aim is to ensure that regulations align with industry interests on both sides of the Atlantic.

California has been receptive to the increased presence of foreign diplomats, with countries like the EU, Singapore, Ireland, and Italy also sending representatives. Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, who leads California’s international outreach efforts, highlighted the state’s stability, especially in comparison to dysfunction in Washington. Foreign partners view California as a reliable partner that shares their concerns on issues like climate change and women’s rights.

The unique appeal of California is evident as it stands apart from the “Trumpism” that worries many foreign partners. The state’s progressive stance and alignment on key global issues make it an attractive partner for international collaboration.
