Rahul Dravid clarifies Ishan Kishan’s absence: “We are not forcing him to…”

Rahul Dravid Highlights Ishan Kishan’s Need to Resume Cricket Before National Selection

New Delhi: Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, addressed concerns regarding Ishan Kishan’s extended absence from the sport, stating that Kishan must determine when he will resume playing cricket in any form before being considered for national selection. Kishan, who was a regular member of the Indian team across formats, has been on a break since requesting time off during the South Africa tour in December due to personal reasons. Dravid clarified the situation following India’s series-leveling win over England.

Dravid stated, “There is a way back for anyone and everyone. I don’t want to go on laboring about the Ishan Kishan point. I have tried to explain this as best as I can. The point was he had requested a break, and we were happy to give him the break. Whenever he is ready, he needs to play some cricket and come back. The choice is his. We are not forcing him to do anything.” Dravid made it clear that the team management stands by this stance.

Considering KS Bharat’s less-than-impressive performance with the bat in the current series against England and Rishabh Pant’s ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in a car accident, India could benefit from Ishan Kishan’s inclusion. Dhruv Jurel was also part of the squads for the initial two Tests.

“We are in touch with him; it is not that we have not been in touch. He has not yet started playing, so at the moment, it is not something we can consider. He decides when he wants to be ready. We have got options with Rishabh injured and stuff. I am sure the selectors will weigh all options,” Dravid added.

Dravid expressed satisfaction with the way Bharat kept wickets in the first two Tests but acknowledged that Bharat could have performed better with the bat. Bharat mistimed a shot and got caught at mid-on in the second innings, failing to make a significant impact with the bat in the series.

“As a coach, you want players to grab the opportunities. His keeping has been good, but he will also agree that he could have done better with the bat,” Dravid concluded.
