Following the merger of the USFL and XFL, several teams are set to fold. As per a report from Front Office Sports, four former USFL teams have been notified that they will not be able to continue in the new league. Discussions are still ongoing regarding which former XFL teams will also be shuttered.
In September, the USFL and XFL announced their merger with the aim of establishing a football league that could thrive outside the NFL season. With the new league featuring eight franchises, both the USFL and XFL have to eliminate half of their teams.
The USFL has already made decisions regarding the New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, and Pittsburgh Maulers, bringing them to an end. On the other hand, the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, Memphis Showboats, and Michigan Panthers will all be joining the new league.
Meanwhile, the XFL is yet to finalize which of its eight teams will continue operations. The latest iteration of the XFL included the Arlington Renegades, D.C. Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, San Antonio Brahmas, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks, and Vegas Vipers.
The new league is scheduled to debut in March 2024, and the formal announcement of all eight franchises is expected to come soon. The main question remains whether this league will have the sustainability that previous alternative football leagues have lacked.
