Indian doctor ordered to pay £135,000 for hitting girl with car.

Indian-Origin Doctor Ordered To Pay 1,35,000 Pounds To Girl She Hit With Car

The case brought by the girl was that Dr Chandran’s negligence caused the incident

London:

A UK court has ruled that an Indian-origin doctor must pay approximately Rs 1.41 crore in damages to a schoolgirl whom she hit with her luxury car in 2018. The incident resulted in severe head injuries and health complications for the young girl.

The doctor, Dr Shanthi Chandran, was driving her BMW i3 Range Extender on Buckingham Road in Bicester, Oxfordshire, when she collided with the then-12-year-old girl while on her way to work in Buckinghamshire, as reported by the Oxford Mail newspaper.

According to a police officer, the force of the collision caused the girl’s body to be carried 11 meters beyond the pedestrian crossing, almost reaching the entrance of a nearby petrol station. She suffered a severe head injury, a brain bleed, and a fractured left collarbone.

The court documents reveal that the girl experienced cognitive and psychiatric problems following the accident, including nightmares and symptoms resembling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the first year after the incident.

In a recent judgement, Deputy High Court Judge Dexter Dias KC ordered Dr Chandran to pay the girl 135,000 pounds (Rs 1.41 crore) in damages. The court found Dr Chandran primarily responsible for the collision and attributed 60% liability to her, with 40% in favor of the claimant. As a result, the originally proposed damages of GBP 225,000 were reduced by 40% due to the claimant’s contributory negligence in stepping out into the road while the traffic lights were green.
