Israel’s strike in Syria claims the life of senior Iranian general, according to Iran.

Iran Says Israeli Strike Kills Senior General In Syria

Moussavi was a companion of General Qassem Soleimani

Tehran, Iran:

A senior general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was fatally struck by an Israeli attack in Syria on Monday, as confirmed by the military force. In response, Tehran has vowed to hold Israel accountable for this “crime.”

According to Iranian state media, Razi Moussavi, described as “one of the most experienced advisors” of the Quds Force, the foreign division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), also lost his life in the incident.

Israel, which has consistently expressed its opposition to Iran’s expanding presence in Syria, has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi extended his condolences for Moussavi’s death and emphasized that Israel “will certainly pay for this crime.”

The official news agency IRNA reported that the general was killed in an attack by the “Zionist regime” in the suburb of Damascus known as Zeinabiyah. Moussavi was actively involved in providing logistical support to resistance groups in Syria, according to IRNA.

The IRGC released a statement attributing Moussavi’s death to a “missile attack” and pledged to avenge his killing. The statement also highlighted Moussavi’s close association with Quds commander General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated in a US drone strike in 2020.

Moussavi’s death marks the most senior loss of a Quds Force general since Soleimani’s assassination, which will be commemorated by Iran next week on its fourth anniversary.

Iran’s state TV reported that Moussavi was targeted by three missiles, and footage showed smoke rising from the area of the strike. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported Israeli strikes on positions used by Iranian and Hezbollah forces in the Sayyida Zeinab area.

Israel has conducted numerous air strikes targeting Iran-backed forces, Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The IRGC previously accused Israel of killing two of its members in Syria on December 2.

Iran, which supports Hamas both financially and militarily, has praised the recent attacks on southern Israel by the Palestinian group but denied any direct involvement. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran has not recognized the state of Israel and has prioritized supporting the Palestinian cause in its foreign policy.
