Moscow:
Five civilians lost their lives on Sunday due to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Kherson region, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Meanwhile, Russian-installed officials in the eastern town of Horlivka confirmed one civilian death resulting from Kyiv’s shelling.
Russian forces had vacated Kherson, the administrative center of the Kherson region on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine, and the western bank of the River over a year ago. However, they have been continuously shelling several areas in the region from their positions on the eastern bank.
Ukrainian officials stated that the deaths in Kherson occurred during the relentless Russian shelling of the city and the region over the past 24 hours.
According to regional police, three individuals died due to shelling of an apartment building and a private home in Kherson city. In a small town south of Kherson, a woman was killed in a drone attack, while a second woman lost her life when a town further north came under heavy fire.
Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, head of the press office of Kherson’s regional military administration, reported that the attacks resulted in partial disruption of gas and water supplies. Additionally, a medical facility was also hit during the assault. “The windows were broken, the building was damaged,” Tolokonnikov said.
In Horlivka, a town approximately 600 km (400 miles) northeast of Kherson and under Russian control in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a shopping center and several other buildings were destroyed by Ukrainian shelling, stated Ivan Prikhodko, the Russian-installed mayor of Horlivka, on the Telegram messaging app. The attacks claimed the life of one woman and left six civilians injured, according to Prikhodko.
The reports provided by Russia and Ukraine have not been independently verified by Reuters.
While both Moscow and Kyiv deny intentionally targeting civilians in the ongoing war that Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022, both sides have conducted numerous strikes on critical infrastructure that is essential to their respective militaries.
