Guwahati:

A love triangle turned deadly at a luxurious hotel in Guwahati on Monday, resulting in a swift arrest before the suspects could flee to Kolkata, nearly 500 kilometers away.

Sandip Suresh Kambli, a 42-year-old car dealer from Pune, was discovered dead yesterday afternoon at the Azara hotel near Guwahati airport. Anjali Shaw, 25, who worked at a restaurant in Kolkata airport, and her boyfriend Rakesh Shaw, 27, were apprehended by the police before they could reach the airport to board their flight to Kolkata.

According to sources, Anjali had befriended Kambli at the airport last year and the two were involved in a relationship. However, Anjali was already in a relationship with Rakesh, who had been pressuring her to marry him. Complicating matters further, Anjali admitted during interrogation that Kambli possessed intimate photos of her on his phone.

Consequently, the couple – Anjali and Rakesh – devised a plan to confront Kambli about the photos. Initially, they had arranged to meet at the Kolkata airport, but Kambli changed the location to Guwahati, where he booked a room at the five-star hotel.

The couple flew together to Guwahati but separated upon arrival. Without Kambli’s knowledge, Rakesh booked a room for himself at the same hotel. As per their plan, Anjali met up with Kambli in the city, and they checked into the hotel together, while Rakesh arrived separately.

During their meeting, Kambli became enraged upon Rakesh’s arrival, leading to a physical altercation between the two. In the ensuing fight, Kambli sustained injuries, prompting the couple to flee the scene. They also took two mobile phones belonging to Kambli, which allegedly contained their intimate photos.

Later in the day, a phone call from Rakesh alerted the hotel authorities, who immediately informed the Guwahati city police. Acting promptly, the police analyzed the hotel register, CCTV footage, and airport passengers’ list to identify the two suspects. Anjali and Rakesh were arrested near the hotel before they could board the 9:15 pm flight to Kolkata.

The investigation into the case is ongoing as the police work to piece together the events that led to the fatal altercation.
