India’s Core Issue: Providing Space to Separatists and Terrorists

India Reiterates Concerns Over Canada’s Support for Separatists and Terrorists

New Delhi: India has once again emphasized its “core issue” with Canada, which is the country’s support for separatists, terrorists, and anti-India elements. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi made these comments in response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent remarks about a tonal shift in India-Canada relations.

Bagchi stated that India’s position has remained consistent and the main concern lies in the space given to extremists and anti-India elements in Canada. However, he refrained from directly commenting on Trudeau’s statement.

The strained ties between India and Canada began when Trudeau alleged in September that Indian agents were potentially involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020 and rejected Trudeau’s claims as absurd.

Trudeau has now mentioned that there seems to be an understanding that aggressive tactics against Canada will not resolve the issue and expressed an openness to collaboration. He also cited the recent US indictment of an Indian national involved in a foiled plot to assassinate a Sikh extremist on American soil as a factor that may have influenced India’s approach.

India, on its part, has established an inquiry committee to examine the information received from the US regarding the case. However, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated in Parliament that Canada’s allegations have not been supported by specific evidence or inputs provided to India.

The relationship between the two countries remains delicate, with India emphasizing the importance of standing up for people’s rights, safety, and the rule of law, while also expressing a desire to focus on trade and advancing the Indo-Pacific strategy.

India has recently expressed concerns over the issue of “space given to separatists and terrorists” in Canada. This core issue refers to the alleged presence and activities of individuals or groups within Canada who are believed to be involved in separatist or terrorist activities targeting India. India has raised this concern with Canada, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue in order to maintain strong bilateral relations. The presence of such elements can potentially undermine peace and stability in both countries and poses a threat to national security. India’s call for Canada to take action on this matter highlights the significance of cooperation in combating terrorism and separatism globally.
