Parliament Winter Session: Over 140 MPs suspended; Lok Sabha passes three bills

On the 17th day of the Winter Session of the Parliament, both houses will reconvene for business. 

On Wednesday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will move a bill to amend and consolidate the law relating to the development, expansion and operation of telecommunication services and telecommunication networks in Lok Sabha.

Arjun Ram Meghwal will be moving the bill to regulate the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, the procedure for transaction of business by the Election Commission, and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, as passed by Rajya Sabha, be taken into consideration.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Singh Thakur to move that the Bill to provide for press, registration of periodicals and matters connected therewith or incidental thereto, as passed by Rajya Sabha, be taken into consideration.

Besides, the Bill to consolidate and amend the law relating to Criminal Procedure will also be taken into consideration on Wednesday.

Yesterday, 141 MPs were suspended-95 from Lok Sabha and 46 from Rajya Sabha following a ruckus over the opposition’s demand for a statement from Union Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach incident.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a circular for the suspended MPs, barring them from entering the Parliament chamber, lobby, and galleries.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said a nationwide protest will be held on December 22 against the suspension of 141 MPs.

During the Winter Session of Parliament, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will reconvene for business. On Wednesday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will present a bill in Lok Sabha to amend and consolidate laws related to the development and operation of telecommunication services and networks. Arjun Ram Meghwal will move a bill in Lok Sabha to regulate the appointment and conditions of service of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Additionally, Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur will move a bill for the registration of periodicals and press matters.

The Lok Sabha will also consider a bill to consolidate and amend the law relating to Criminal Procedure. This comes after the suspension of 141 MPs, 95 from Lok Sabha and 46 from Rajya Sabha, due to disruptions caused by the opposition’s demand for a statement on the Parliament security breach. The suspended MPs are barred from entering the Parliament chamber, lobby, and galleries. The government’s actions have drawn criticism from the opposition, with some calling Parliament a “graveyard of the Constitution.”

In the current context, the Winter Session of Parliament has been marked by disruptions and suspensions of MPs. Despite this, the Lok Sabha has managed to pass three bills, including those related to telecommunication services, election commissioners, and criminal procedure. The suspended MPs have announced plans for a nationwide protest on December 22 against their suspension.
